About 18 years ago a Fijian Indian lady allowed her children, Andrew and his sister Deepa, to come to the Sunday Bible classes we conduct at Warringah in Sydney. She didn’t come herself but was content to have her children come. They came for a year or more and then moved to the other side of Sydney, and we thought that we would never hear from them again! Then, a few weeks ago, while I was teaching the teenage class outside on our church grounds, a young man came to the fence and called out to me for Bob Marks. I said, “That’s me” and went over to him, and he introduced himself as Andrew who had come to church here so many years ago! I can’t tell you how much joy I felt at this!
It turned out that he is now living in Kalgoorlie in the center of Western Australia, that he has married a girl, also a Fijian Indian, and they were on their way to Fiji for a vacation. Classes were just about over and I took them in and presented them to the rest of the church who were just as shocked and delighted as I was!
Part of my delight was, that during his brief layover in Sydney, he had been interested enough to come and check out the church that he’d come to so long ago, and introduce his wife to the people. I asked him if he went to church and they said that they did. I did not get to talk further with them about their faith, but he gave me his email address and is now on the list for our weekly newsletter!
In our ministry we are involved with people planting the Word in their hearts, often wondering if it will ever bear any fruit! It can be quite discouraging to spend time with people, picking them up for services, visiting them in their homes, etc., for them to then move away and we not hear from them again. Andrew’s visit helps us realize that God’s Word is powerful, that the Gospel is glorious, and that some will listen and be the good hearts that can respond, and that our job is to simply plant the Word.
